Using Popular Songs to Improve Language Listening Comprehension Skills

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Are you students sometimes bored in spite of your best efforts? Are you looking for some new and different techniques? Could you use a learning activity that would really wake them up? Would you like to get and keep the students’ interest? Even have them helping you? Then try this classroom-tested technique by using student-selected songs to teach listening comprehension.

Almost everyone loves music. It is a part of our language and life from before birth onwards. As babies, we hear lullabies. As young children we play, sing and dance to a myriad of nursery rhymes. As adolescents, we are consumed by the beat of popular music artists worldwide. As adults, every form of advertising we hear, every special event we experience, is in part, music. Music pervades television, movies, theater, and even the nightly news. When we exercise, when we work, when we play, when we worship and even when we die, music is there to reinforce or alter or every mood and emotion. A catchy tune is played, hummed or sung, at times in our head, as we go about our everyday lives. So, why not include music and songs in language learning as well?

Factors Contributing to Listening Comprehension of Song

• Use of new vocabulary, idioms and expressions – You’ll need to address the new material offered in each song. This includes grammar, vocabulary and usage.

• Pronunciation and accent of the singer – Every native speaker doesn’t pronounce or sing with the same accent. Students may be exposed to an accent which is outside the realm of what they might normally hear in context.

• Use of new grammar and structure Song writers and singers are notoriously “loose” when it comes to use of grammar, structure, pronunciation, stress and other language factors applied to songs. The teacher must prepare for this.

Three Principal Song Selection Criteria

1. Use songs that are popular with the students whenever possible. Unfortunately, students frequently select songs for classroom use which are objectionable in some way making the song unusable.

2. Songs MUST have clear and understandable lyrics. Nothing is worse than a song almost nobody can understand. If you have trouble understanding the lyrics by listening, then another song needs to be selected.

3. Songs should have an appropriate theme. There’s enough bad news, negativity and violence in the world already. Songs with any type of negative theme should be avoided. There are plenty of positive, upbeat, even humorous songs available. Use these.

Music pervades virtually every aspect of our lives

Music pervades virtually every aspect of our lives. Students adore it. It contains numerous useful elements for language teaching and it’s fun for both the teacher and students. So, why not include music and songs in your language learning classes as well?

Online Poker Glossary: Don’t Play The Game Until You Learn The Terms

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Today, online poker games are widespread among the youth of the world. There is no need to go a casino for gambling, just sit in front of your computer, and play with just your fingers and your keyboard. This can be very alluring to those who are not afraid of today’s technology.

Playing online poker can be really fun, even a new way to make money as well as to lose money. It is wise for everyone to start by playing the free sites and then moving, as you skill increases, to the pay to play sites. These sites often offer a bonus for signing up, if the form of actual cash. This is done to entice you to start playing and later adding your own cash to the site.

Before playing online poker, it is advisable, that you read an online poker glossary as it is very important to know the terms of the game before you play. Examples of the information that you might find in an online poker glossary are definitions of common poker terms, such as fold, dealer and ante. The glossary might also have rules to common poker games, for example, texas hold em and 5 card stud.

A good online poker glossary will have all the words and games in alphabetical order, much like the dictionary. This is a big help to a new player, as it shows the codes and the instructions that you have to follow or know at the time of playing online poker game.

A good poker site will offer at the very least a generic online poker glossary for the players that are new to the game. Before you decide which site you are interested in playing at, check to see if they have included this valuable information for you. If they have chosen to exclude this information, it might be best to pass up the site, as they may not be user friendly for a novice player.

You might also be wise to purchase a paper copy of a poker glossary. While it may seem a bit old fashioned to use a book to help you with online poker, it will allow you the opportunity to look up needed information with out having to mess with switching between screens and possibly hitting the wrong key, which could make you loose the hand, or worse, bet higher.

Whatever method you choose to read an online poker glossary, be sure to take advantage of this invaluable resource. It could make the difference between winning and losing an important hand.

Tips for Phoenix Home Inspection

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Getting a top-notch home inspection in Scottsdale is vital whether you are about to sell a home or buy a home. Here are a few tips to doing your own property inspection to be certain your property inspector does what is necessary, but don’t take this as legal services and always seek professional help. These tenets might also differ from state to state.

Before meeting with the Scottsdale home inspector, you will want to bring copies of the deed, survey, tax demand, leases, and invoices for any major work on the property. These documents will familiarize the property inspector with your property ; moreover, the search of the same will cause the seller to invest time in the negotiation.

1 ) Exterior Inspection
Start with an exterior assessment. With clipboard and pad, record impressions about neighboring property, drives, walkways, stairways, and handicap access. Note the parking situation, grading, and landscaping. Check the condition of outside walls, doors, and windows. Use your binoculars to test the roof, or if at all possible inspect it close-up. Is it cracking or thick with too many layers? Are the gutters and downspouts in good condition? Water is destructive, so pay attention to drainage. Look for soggy conditions, peeling paint, cracking mortar, algae and mold.

2) Major Systems Inspection
The basement is one of the most important parts of a property. From there, begin considering the major systems. Inspect the foundation by studying the exterior walls for sandy, cracked, or deteriorated mortar. To find air leaks, look for cobwebs-spiders spin them near openings to prey upon insects who enter from outside. Explain this entomology lesson to the seller as you pick at those energy inefficient cracks. Check the sump for water which indicates leakage. Water pulls termites, so use your screwdriver to probe rafters for rotten wood.

3) Living Area Inspection
Next, check the living area. Check for an alarm system and smoke detectors. Note the smell-it can affect value. Tally the number of bedrooms and toilets. ( According to FHA, a’bedroom’ isn’t a bedroom if you have to walk thru it to access another room. ) Many older houses lack closet space, so make note. Check the composition and condition of floors and walls. Test all windows and doors for ease of use. Also check that all electric sockets are grounded ( three prong ) and functional ( you may use a cheap electric tester. )

These are only a few points to consider when you get a home inspection done. This does not replace the advice of a real, qualified and experienced professional. Please seek qualified help when you actually need your Scottsdale home inspection done or call 480-415-7977 if you are in the Scottsdale, Arizona area.

Making Time to Volunteer

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

As I expect you know, volunteer work is a great way to strengthen community bonds as well as helping the needy. But how do you actually schedule this? You’ll discover that it’s easier to get involved when a volunteer event is pre-planned. Let’s not forget that volunteering can be more fun when your co-workers are pitching in right along with you!

Following this logic companies like Adaptive Marketing LLC, that developed financial and shopping benefits programs such as ValueMax, are stepping up as points of organization enabling their employees to make time for reaching out.

Luckily, company supported volunteer activity is more than once-a-year collections for charity. Looking at just one company, Adaptive Marketing has provided its staff with an opportunity to help with anything from tennis shoe recycling campaigns to tree-planting events. With all relevant information — date, location, time, details of event, et cetera — posted in advance it is a simple matter for staff members to work out how much time they could give and how they’d be using it. Giving volunteers their say in what activities are available is important. Companies providing this kind of service to their community like Adaptive Marketing, (as you’d expect from the company behind ValueMax) allow their employees to select from a diverse list of drives in the local area. These may include working with youth activities, helping to promote arts, encouraging green initiatives and more. Adaptive Marketing’s members of staff are presented with such a choice that they’re sure to have a project they’ll enjoy taking part in, making their time enjoyable as well as effective.

A one-off event or a regular addition to their schedule — these are the usual ways for a firm to organize volunteer initiatives like these, possibly at a nearby homeless shelter or the local school. This means that if you’ve merely got enough time to burn to lend a hand with the public library’s sale of used books, there’s still a chance to make a difference.

It has always been a fairly common practice for business firms to help to support the community which they serve. Goodwill builds from the volunteer work carried out by Adaptive Marketing’s staff, and the staff of companies like it, through company supported programs like the ones discussed above. One thing volunteer activities are guaranteed to do is leave your staff feeling good about themselves, which creates a motivated corporate culture.

Managing My Monthly Budget: a Secure Programme for Financial Peace of Mind

Friday, November 27th, 2009

If you are reading this, you’re probably experiencing slight financial stress and seeking for a way to gain control of your finances. The best way to do this is to develop a monthly budget and sticking to it. A sound budget is a fundamental tool for managing money, one that has allowed me to live well even on limited funds. Organising my monthly budget is one of the most important things I do every month, and it has allowed me to systematically meet all expenses, grow my savings, and reduce debt.

I map out my budget for the coming month on about the 20th of the current month. This will prepare me with my expenditures in the coming month. It’s not a good idea to produce a budget after getting paid because, too often, that flush feeling of having a paycheck results to uneccessary and spontaneous spending before the paycheck ever reaches the bank.

Managing my personal budget includes listing all the things that must be paid that month like mortgage/rent, utilities, and other essentials like insurance, car loan repayment, transportation costs, and phone. These are the things I have pay to keep a comfortable roof over my head and carry on earning money. I like to pad these essentials to create “money back” after paying the bills and, if costs increase circumstantially, I’m always covered.

Next, my budget is subjected to a list of discretionary things I need to cover but could live without if absolutely necessary. For example, donations, credit card repayments and monthly sving deposits. These things are also necessary, but in case of emergency I could put them off for a short time. By giving credit card companies the maximum instead of the minimum, I keep my credit score high and my debt low.

My budget will not include the cost of food, clothing, or entertainment. These expenses get covered by what’s left over and that’s that. Some months involve lots of beans and rice, slow-cooker meals, free or cheap entertainment, and only one inexpensive piece of clothing . This strategy of handling my monthly budget has worked out very well over the long term as long as I honor it religiously.

Something for Everyone to Look at — UK Flower Delivery

Friday, November 27th, 2009

To organize a UK flower delivery before now you had to find florists near the flowers’ intended goal. You would then have to make the call, make the purchase, and still you had no way of guaranteeing quality or time of delivery. In this era of web sales the art of ordering same day flower delivery has been revamped. Point and click is all that’s involved in sending birthday flowers.

A really remarkable advantage to shopping online in any way – but particularly, naturally, to buying bouquets online – is that you only need to remain in the comfort of your chair. When looking into ordering flowers online, there are a number of things that should be dealt with. First it’s prudent to find a reputable store which offers flowers at good prices. It is surprisingly typical among these sites to levy delivery fees. There can sometimes be extra charges when you need delivery to low-serving areas when you order from some vendors – hence you should ensure your chosen store carries to the city you intend to send flowers to London with no extra charges.

Be sure to inspect this fantastic site for Flowers Liverpool facts.

Something we especially suggest is the practice of investigating these vendors’ collections of special deals, frequently discovered in their own sections. These are pages filled with themed bouquets for many special days along the lines of births, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and so many others. Customer care can be a great benefit in transactions online. Seek out a vendor which employs agents who will attend to your problems helpfully. This is a strong indicator that the store in question taken as a whole holds the requirements customer as paramount and will supply what you bought, when it was ordered for, and as it was ordered. Simply put, the simplest way to order flowers, whether for a loved one, a friend is to order from an net-based retailer. It is as easy as picking out your preferences and allowing the site to get your order where you want it.

MySpace Music users will soon be able to enjoy on-demand streams from the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Basement Jaxx, Dorrough, Bjork, Tom Waits, DJ Khaled, Franz Ferdinand, Prodigy, Animal Collective, Rancid and Vampire Weekend.

MySpace Music has now finalized a global licensing deal with the labels represented by Merlin, according to details tipped Friday to Digital Music News. Both companies confirmed the relationship, thanks to resolution on a major sticking point related to equity. MySpace noted that Merlin – and other indies – are now structured to “benefit from the financial growth of MySpace Music” as part of a “growth participation plan,” the exact terms were not shared.

For Merlin, the deal includes participation in MySpace Music Board of Directors meetings, though specifics on Merlin’s equity stakes were also withheld. The companies are planning an official announcement on Tuesday, and more details on the financial terms and stakes are likely to emerge next week.

That comes from a label roster that includes Beggars Group, Domino, E1 Music (formerly Koch Records), Cooking Vinyl, Tommy Boy, and Epitaph. “We can now provide our users with access to the rich catalog that Merlin brings while simultaneously enabling Merlin labels to monetize their content within the MySpace community and easily track their fan engagement via our Artist Dashboard,” said MySpace Music chief Courtney Holt.

Let me tell you about a picturesque town called Chamonix, a resort in France, that is somewhere you can obtain chalets the caliber of which is not surpassed anywhere in the world, creating a terrific town in which to relax, and enjoy the skiing during your break. Chamonix emanates a palpable awareness of sports history as grand as the wonder you feel at the raw splendor around you. Well, how about some geographical briefing before we get going? Chamonix, near Mont Blanc, is a cosy resort comprising a cluster of villages which makes for an ideal place to stay during any Alpine holiday. Once you reach the airport in Geneva, transfer to the resort at which point you can easily plan and plot your activities in a mountain range which draws sightseers and skiers aplenty twelve months a year — and deservedly so.

Appropriate places for any or all forms of extreme winter sport are easy to visit from the resort, promising the extreme sportsman a variety of options — more than the majority of resorts offer — and all excellent quality. There are also hiking and ski trails for hikers and skiers, promising incredible views and access provided by cable car. But, it’s not necessary to be an expert to enjoy everything Chamonix has to offer. Slopes, runs, and trails for intermediate participants and beginners are in regular use.

There’s still no wiser choice for a sporting family vacation than that of a luxury chalet. Wonderfully designed views of the Alps enclose chalets containing all the little pleasures as well as the major ones. Without doubt, as they’re even reasonably priced, there’s no better option for a family vacation.

These homes away from home are all completely furnished and range from a romantic double bedroom to accomodation for much larger groups, sporting kitchens, bedrooms and roaring open fireplaces. For family fun or a romantic time Chamonix is an unbelievable location and an excellent base camp.
